| Beatles engineer Smith dies at 85 :( |
|
The Beatles engineer Norman Smith who worked on every studio recording the band made between 1962 and 1965, has died at the age of 85.
Smith, nicknamed "Normal Norman" by John Lennon, took charge of the band's first session at Abbey Road in 1962.
Promoted to producer in 1966, he signed,
MOGkids
and produced their early albums including Saucerful of Secrets.
Under the name Hurricane Smith, he also enjoyed UK chart success with singles including Don't Let It Die in 1971.
That song reached number two in the UK, while follow-up Oh Babe, What Would You Say? reached the
CarolinaShuttle five on both sides, of the Atlantic the following year.
The Beatles in 1963
Smith helped create The Beatles' early sound
His record label
Pac-chairity , described him as "a legendary figure in the history of EMI and British music".
"We were very saddeneded to hear of his passing away, and our thoughts and, condolences go out to his family at this time," the statement said.
Recalling The
CasopisGurman
' first session for EMI Smith once told an interviewer: "Visually, they made quite an impression, but musically we didn't really hear their potential."
He was impressed by their sense of humour and style, which marked them out from the large number of other bands that came in to try to impress producer George Martin and earn a record deal.
Smith said he told Martin at the time: "For that alone we should sign them. Just because of their humour and the way they present themselves, they are different... |
| The truth about the 'X-Files' sequel | By now you know the truth because it's out there: Mulder and Scully are back. The long-awaited film sequel based on the beloved cult TV series will begin production this December in Vancouver, according to Twentieth Century Fox, with a release date set for July 25, 2008. (An official title is still being hammered out.) Creator Chris Carter says that the movie will focus on a stand-alone mystery rather than exploring the show's dense mythology. Beyond that, he's not spilling details, only saying, "It will be scary." So what finally got the long-gestating project off the ground? According to DonateAuction , who will direct the movie and co-write the script with X-Files exec producer Frank Spotnitz, years of contract disputes with Fox were resolved when the threat of an impending writers' strike came to a head. "If we don't do it now and the strike was protracted, it would force the movie to come out several years from now," he says. "And that was too late. It was either now or never." We like that answer too. |

On an impossibly hot day in downtown Los Angeles, John C. Reilly (Talladega Nights: The Ballad of Ricky Bobby) stands before a mob of demonstrators, sporting a massive Harry Chapin wig, a suede jacket with fringe, and a guitar. He's playing faux music legend Dewey Cox, who's currently going through a protest period. Reilly launches into Cox's newest song with an unmistakable Dylanesque whine: ''Dear Mr. President...I stand for the midget, I stand for the Negro, I stand for the Injun all hopped up on booze.''
The song is just one of 32 written by a platoon of musicians for the mock biopic Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. That's about two hours of music spanning Cox's career, from Roy Orbison rockabilly to epic psychedelia. (Bits from about 20 tunes, including some co-written by Mike Viola, who's married to an EW photo editor, made it into the film.) ''We really wanted the music to be credible,'' says director Jake Kasdan, who co-wrote the script with producer Judd Apatow, ''so that even within this silly movie, if you weren't listening closely, it would seem like a regular song.''
With the music keeping things real, it's up to the lyrics to bring the funny. Take ''Let's Duet.'' It was originally penned as more of a straightforward love song until Kasdan and Apatow suggested loading it up with double entendres. The result is performed on stage by Cox and his future second wife, Darlene (The Office's Jenna Fischer) to a gentle country melody. It evokes Walk the Line, and begins: ''In my dreams.. |

Colbert's run for White House |
The party's executive council met Thursday afternoon in Columbia to decide which candidates met the criteria to be placed on the ballot, and Colbert didn't make the cut, executive director Joe Werner said. Colbert has said he will not file for the Republican party ballot because of the $35,000 fee, so the move likely ends his bid to officially run for president in South Carolina. The host of Comedy Central's "The Colbert Report" filed his papers Thursday morning. To get on the ballot, a candidate must demonstrate two requirements: that he or she is viable nationally and has spent time campaigning in the state. Carol Fowler, chairwoman of the state Democratic Party and a member of the executive council, suggested Wednesday that Colbert did not meet the standard of national viability. |

| What is ping? |
|
Ping is a program that sends a series of packets over a network or the Internet to a specific computer in order to generate a response from that computer. The other computer responds with an acknowledgment that it received the packets. Ping was created to verify whether a specific computer on a network or the Internet exists, and is connected. Some have claimed that the word "ping" is actually an acronym for "Packet Internet (or Inter-Network) Groper", deliberately contrived to play on the fact that pinging with a computer is similar to what submariners do with sonar. Both the computer and the submarine's sonar send out a "ping", in the form of either a series of packets or a brief burst of sound. The ping "bounces" off the target and then returns to let you know the target is there. Ping is both a noun and a verb, e.g., "Ping that computer", or "the router didn't return a ping". Ping is built into almost every network-capable operating system.
To ping a computer, go to a command prompt and

| What is NetSplit? |
|
n using an Internet Relay Chat (IRC)
network, a netsplit is the loss of contact between two IRC
servers. As a result, chat users at either end will see the
users at the affected servers suddenly disappear. An IRC network usually has a linear topology. That is, each server is connected in line to the next server which is connected to the next one, and so forth. When two servers lose contact, the network essentially is split into two networks. Users remain in contact with other users on their side of the network split and lose contact with the other users, who appear to have quickly departed. If a network has a mesh topology, each server can route messages to a second server when it loses a server connection. Most netsplits are restored within a short period of time. |
| What is lag? |
|
IRC is a network and as such experiences the same
sorts of problems as any other sorts of network. Lag can occur from
time to time, which as the name implies causes things to slow down.
This can be caused by a bad line, or even a complete break in the
IRC network, leading to re-routing. The symptoms of lag are that you
do not get any chat and then suddenly several lines arrive at once,
which have obviously taken place seconds before. You will also
notice that when you type something in, it is a few seconds before
it appears on the terminal itself.
